Mitsubishi Evo X FQ-400

From the ‘It’s Better in Europe’ file comes the Mitsubishi Evo X FQ-400. While the hottest Mitsubishi Evo model on the U.S. market is the 291 hp Evo X MR, Mitsubishi U.K. has been making some serious improvements for the home market. For the last three generations of the Lancer Evo models, Mitsubishi U.K. has offered various models known as "FQ" (rumored to stand for F***ing Quick), and the FQ400 is the fastest of them all.Mitsu teamed up with ADR Motorsport to tweak the standard 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo engine. It’s boosted with revised ECU programming and a new exhaust to produce around 405bhp. The peak torque will be 400lb ft. The car gets new cooling intakes and vents, including a larger bonnet (hood) intake and cooling slots for the rear brakes, upgraded brakes, six-pot calipers at the front, and new 18-inch alloy wheels. The 0 to 60 time is expected to be about 3.5 seconds. Price? Between £45,000 and £50,000 (about $67,000 to $74,000), but you don’t need to concern yourself with that. Since it’s not available in the U.S., it only hurts to think about it. Maybe a 305 hp Subaru Imprza WRX STI may help ease the pain?

2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara Review

2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara Review

Over the past decade, Suzuki’s Grand Vitara-along with the Vitara, and the Sidekick that preceded it-has earned a reputation as a capable little sport-utility vehicle that’s buff enough for real off-roading yet extremely easy to park and city-friendly. But almost anyone who drove it would agree that there were several sore points-most notably ride comfort, seating space, noise, and too many, looks.HistoryAs the market for compact sport-utes continues to heat up, Suzuki has a new version of the Grand Vitara for ’06. It’s a little bigger, a little softer inside and out, and a lot more stylish; and just looking at the basics, it should boast a much-broadened appeal for American buyers. While putting the Grand Vitara through the paces, we pondered if it this new version has what it takes to break into the mainstream market, or if it will remain more of a niche model. The Grand Vitara’s look is sleeker and more rounded, and a little more elegant, though it keeps the big spare tire hanging on the back and the sideways-hinged tailgate. It might be hard to see that the Grand Vitara has grown, as much of the compact-SUV competition was already larger, but the difference is quite significant. The new Grand is 11.5 inches longer and an inch wider, with a wheelbase more than six inches longer than the 2005 model-a noteworthy upsizing that gives a lot more space inside.OverviewTo someone who had the last-generation Grand Vitara on their shopping list, then climbed inside one and thought it felt just a little too tight, the difference is obvious from the moment you climb into the front seats and find that there’s much more adjustability and support for big and/or tall folks. Those looking at the Grand Vitara will also find that there’s plenty of back-seat space for most adult-size passengers. The new interior design is the most dramatic and impressive aspect of the Grand Vitara. Not that it’s groundbreaking, but it actually feels luxurious. While the former vehicle tended to feel plasticky and plebeian, it looks like Suzuki designers and product planners really studied the SUV competition and incorporated some of their better interior traits. We had plenty of other good things to say about the interior appointments themselves. Our vehicle had comfy heated seats, a good driving position, and very effective automatic climate control. The sound system is also standout, with great overall sound and MP3 capability.Last year’s Grand Vitara was built over a traditional body-on-frame layout, but the new version has a unibody construction that’s enforced with a built-in ladder frame-a combination meant to allow for a more refined on-road ride without sacrificing some off-road toughness and a more refined on-road ride. The suspension has been reworked as well, with struts in front and a multi-link independent setup in back.

suzuki Splash

The 2008 Splash will be unveiled in September at Frankfurt Motor Show. But is never to early to hear info about the car. This is why, Suzuki unveiled the first official images and details about this compact car. Splash will go on sale in Spring, 2008.Based on the platform of the Swift, the Suzuki Splash is the fourth all new Suzuki model within just three years, and it epitomises Suzuki’s ‘Way of Life!’ philosophy, underpinning its strategy of building cars that excite customers all over the world.Styling and the design philosophyThe styling team for Splash was headed by Akira Kamio (44), who also played a big part in the styling of Swift. As early as 2003, he began to analyse the necessary characteristics for a future European mini-MPV.It soon became clear that whilst it should not look like a shrunken version of a full-sized MPV this car must keep all of its advantages: the high seating position and resulting good all-round visibility, the pleasant feeling of space and great flexibility allowing the rear compartment to be easily turned into a substantial stowage space. In order to get up-to-date information, a group of 10 Suzuki designers from Japan travelled to Germany in January, 2004 to spend a period of six months there. They analysed European trends in cars, fashion, lifestyle and design.Out of their impressions and findings, they finally distilled three models, which, in so called ‘car clinics’, were then presented to audiences of owners of compact cars and small MPVs. In the end, these audiences favoured the model offering the optimum combination of dynamic sportiness with youthful styling, implying a positive attitude to life and maximum suitability for everyday and recreational use.At the Paris Motor Show in late September 2006, Suzuki presented ‘Project Splash’, a concept car showcasing a taste of the styling of the future production-version Splash. The extremely positive response of the audience confirmed to Akira Kamio and his team that they had taken the right path for Splash. One thing is certain: Splash will be a major player in the mini-MPV segment. While ideally suited to tight parking conditions, the 3.72 m-long car nevertheless offers sufficient space for up to five occupants plus plenty of sports and leisure equipment.Apart from attractive styling, a cute minicar also requires the best engineering. This includes safe and precise handling, outstanding ride comfort, a high degree of environmental compatibility, and optimum passive and active safety. Hence Splash uses a 30 mm shorter wheelbase version of the Swift’s platform, Suzuki’s current best seller. The chassis, steering and brakes were adapted to the new parameters in extensive tests, which included tens of thousands of miles of testing over various types of European roads, from English cobblestones, through twisty southern Spanish tracks to fast German autobahns.Choice of three enginesCustomers will have the choice of three engines – two petrol and a diesel. The petrol units are 100% Suzuki designs, a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit producing 65 PS (48 kW) and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine developing 86 PS (63 kW). Both are of advanced four-valve-per-cylinder design, offering a sophisticated combination of smoothness, low-end torque and fuel efficiency.Diesel fans can choose the 1.3-litre common-rail direct injection engine available with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Producing 75 PS (55 kW), this 4-cylinder unit is manufactured by Suzuki at its new diesel engine plant in India under licence from Fiat Group Automobiles. All three engines are combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 86 PS petrol version can also be ordered with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Given the stricter standards now being demanded with respect to environmental compatibility, all engines are Euro4-compliant, with CO2 emissions between 120 and 140 g/km in combination with manual transmissions
